As part of its awareness and humanitarian programs aimed at protecting members of the Moroccan community, the League launched an extensive campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of customary marriage and its legal and social consequences for Moroccan families abroad. This campaign, which lasted several weeks, included awareness seminars, field meetings, and educational materials distributed within community circles.
The initiative comes amid the growing phenomenon of customary marriage among Moroccan community members in Egypt, and the complex legal problems arising from it affecting women's and children's rights, particularly regarding proof of marriage, lineage, custody, and alimony. The campaign aimed to educate community members about the legal procedures to be followed to ensure proper marriage documentation that protects the rights of all parties.
The awareness seminars organized by the League witnessed significant turnout from both women and men, addressing the religious and legal aspects of marriage in both Morocco and Egypt. Experts in family law and religious jurisprudence provided comprehensive explanations about the importance of official marriage registration, the difference between customary and civil marriage, and procedures for regularizing legal status.
The campaign extended beyond awareness to include individual legal consultations for cases requiring urgent intervention. Field teams conducted home visits to Moroccan families in various areas, distributing awareness brochures and posters explaining legal procedures in a simplified manner.
Cooperation with Egyptian legal and human rights institutions was a key element in the success of this campaign. Partnerships with Moroccan and Egyptian lawyers and experts contributed to providing specialized advisory services, while efforts were coordinated with competent Egyptian authorities to facilitate procedures and remove obstacles for community members.
Testimonies from beneficiaries of this campaign were deeply moving. Many families suffering from the repercussions of customary marriage managed to regularize their status thanks to the legal guidance provided by the League. These success stories serve as a strong motivation to continue and expand these awareness programs.
The League affirms that protecting the Moroccan family and the rights of its members remains at the core of its priorities. This campaign is part of a series of ongoing initiatives aimed at empowering the community intellectually and legally, ensuring a dignified and secure life for Moroccans in Egypt.
